Check out some of the interview our Silk Dental prosthodontic dental care provider had with the magazine, and be sure to look out for more parts, coming soon. In part one, Dr. Chang answers the question: What causes tooth discoloration. See the answer to this, and more from the Modern Luxury Article below:
If you are in need of tooth restoration, or if you are unhappy with the way your smile looks, your first inclination may be to head to a cosmetic dentist. While this may be a good idea, it may not be the best idea. There are many types of dentists, but it may be wiser to head to a prosthodontic dentist that has had extra training to deal with cases at a more advanced level.
Many patients have never heard of a prosthodontic dentist. However, prosthodontists (or specialized restorative dentists) are highly regarded by the American Dental Association (ADA). In fact, prosthodontics is one of only nine sub-specialties of dentistry that are recognized by the ADA (cosmetic dentistry is not one of the nine specialties). This means that dental schools instruct dentists in techniques, methods, and specialized training in prosthodontics—dental schools do not instruct dentists in cosmetic dentistry.
Many patients come to [Dr. Chang] with many questions. The following are just a list of the most frequently asked questions:
Q. What causes tooth discoloration?
A. Tooth discoloration is a normal part of aging. As people age, enamel wears down, and teeth take on a duller appearance. Teeth can also become discolored from smoking and heavy consumption of coffee or tea. What causes tooth discoloration includes side effects of medications (specifically certain antibiotics) used during the developmental phase of the teeth, an individual’s genetic makeup, and excessive fluoride consumption (fluorosis, seen in both children and adults). Teeth whitening and veneers offer a cosmetic dentistry solution for people with discolored or dull-looking teeth.
