Dental Implants

There are now more options to replace missing teeth and one that is gaining in popularity and use is the dental implant.

The implant is usually made of titanium and is surgically placed by a dentist or dental specialist such as an oral surgeon. These screw-like parts are placed into the jawbone and are meant to imitate the root of the tooth.

HOW LONG IS THE PROCESS

There are several factors that will determine the length of time needed for an implant procedure.

• Your dental health
• The number of teeth involved
• Which teeth are replaced
• If there will be a tooth extracted prior to implant placement
• Restoring your mouth with a dental implant is accomplished in two phases and the whole process can take six to twelve months. It may take up to twenty-four months if an extraction needs to heal or bone grafts are required before the “SCREW” is implanted.

These factors will also determine the total number of visits to the dentist throughout the treatment period. For instance, a single tooth implant surgery can typically take one to two hours from start to finish. This includes time for anesthesia as well as dressing the patient for a sterile surgical environment.

IS IT PAINFUL?

Just as with any surgery, there can be some discomfort and/or pain. Local surgical anesthesia, CBD, nitrous oxide and/or IV for oral sedation are used to eliminate any discomfort at the time of the procedure. Our office has many options to help alleviate your fear of this procedure.

Most patients report that they were comfortable following the procedure and conventional local surgical anesthesia is adequate. Contrary to what most patients believe, it is actually more comfortable for a patient to go through a dental implant procedures as opposed to an actual extraction.

Our experienced dentist/dental specialist will prescribe medications to ease any discomfort that may occur after the procedure.

Is the Dental Implant Surgery Painful?

Dental implant placement is typically a minor surgical procedure that takes only a short time. The surgery is performed under a local anesthesia or sedation, and the dental patient should not feel any pain during this time. However, there may be some discomfort and/or swelling for a few days following the procedure. Your Dallas dentist will provide post-surgery instructions and may prescribe a pain medication to relieve any discomfort.
